Big Ideas Article

"Big Ideas do not completely explicate an idea, but represent a host of concepts that form the idea." This sentence in the article written by S. Walker helped me to understand what the purpose of a "big idea" is. I also learned that it is very important that you find interest in your big idea otherwise the project will be mundane and seem like a boring homework assignment. Another way to view the artisit's big idea is to think of it as an artist's purpose, the reason as to why they are artmaking in the first place. I also learned that the artist's theme and big idea could be the same thing depending on whether or not the theme is seen throughout the artist's work. If it is then the theme and the big dea are the same. In addition, I learned that subject matter is the artists topic whereas big ideas are the artisits concepts. I think it can all get a little confusing, especially when the definitions can sometimes overlap with eachother. However, I really did enjoy this article because it helped me to understand the foundations of a big idea and what is important when trying to come up with one. All of of this information will make it easier for me when working on our project.

BIG IDEAS WARM UP

Cruelty
When I think of cruelty the first thing that comes to mind is hatred and hurt. The next thing that comes to mind is animal cruelty. I have watched many different shows on TV displaying animal cruelty. I just can't come to terms with people who do that. It is so awful and all on little animals that are helpless and rely on us humans to provide them with everything they deserve. I also think of people who say "that's so cruel" however, usually I feel like when the word is used in a sentence like that the word is taken more lightly than it should.

Discipline
When I think of discipline the first the thing that comes to mind is a mom and a little child and the little child being sent to time-out. But if you actually think about discipline there are so many different forms. When I was in 5th grade if you were ever late or did something wrong you would receive a little pink slip of paper that was called a referral. Too many referrals would be linked with an after school detention. In addition, there is discipline when you are an adult too...maybe you are asked to take off work for a few weeks if you got heated at a meeting?

Chaos
Chaos reminds me of a party or just craziness. Something that is just nuts that wouldn't normally happen. I like the word itself but dont really like the ideas behind the word. I think that is why I probably chose it. But I view chaos in a positive light, I don't think a bad day when I think chaos I think fun.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was a famous fashion designer who unfortunately passed away in February 2010.

These designs are from McQueen's Fall 2009 collection. He was known for unique and out-of-this-world runway shows. Many of these models fashioned clothes with odd cuts and headdresses. In addition, most of the models had make-up on like that of a clown. Even the patterns, shapes, and colors used resemble a clown uniform (especially the first picture). The last picture on this blog features a woman who looks bird like with the black feathers and the wing like features.

It was said that McQueen always tried use "rebellion and fantasy" in his fashion. The clown like figures and the animal replica definitely defines rebellion and fantasy.
He enjoyed unconventional ways and always struck up some arguments and controversies with some of his fashions and collection titles. For example, he named one of his collections Highland Rape and he is famous for the "bumsters" which

was a low rise trouser.

The women in these pictures look empty and it seems as though the clothes are expressing their emotions and feelings for them.

I appreciate his work and it is truly fascinating to look at.
